Introducing children from birth through the fifth grade to the value and pleasure of books is the primary focus of Children’s Services in the Lorain Public Library System. This goal is accomplished in a variety of fun, engaging ways:

Main Library: Browser's® Corner opened in 2006, a special section for children birth through six years old and their parents or caregivers offering early literacy computers, a train table, games and puzzles. Click for pic
Avon Branch: Children can expand their imagination with the puppets and puppet theatre in the comfortable Children’s Area. Little hands can also keep busy playing with puzzles, or using early literacy computers as their parents browse for library materials. The Children’s Area includes a great selection of themed backpacks, board books, picture and easy readers, fiction and non-fiction for fourth and fifth graders, plus music CDs, videos, DVDs, and more. Columbia Branch: The Branch was renovated and expanded to 7,500 square feet with a grand reopening of the building held on November 9, 2003. Included in the new, comfortable and brightly decorated Children's Area are: puzzles, manipulative toys, games, a Lego table, special bins of books that are within easy reach of small children, and an early literacy computer for preschoolers. Domonkas Branch: The cozy Domonkas Branch Children's Area features the SS Bookworm boat and a comfortable, over-sized chair to enjoy reading and our lake view. Some of the materials available are puzzles, board books, graded readers, holiday and bibliotherapy books and a selection of children's magazines. Special bins by notable authors are within easy reach for curious, young readers. Children's audiovisual items including music CDs, books on cassette and CD, videos and DVDs are also available. North Ridgeville Branch: Opened in 2003; the popular Children’s Area offers a reading village where preschoolers can play inside a store, a library, a school and a post office; picture books arranged in colorful bins with a transportation theme; plus a large collection of board books, two early literacy computers, puzzles and a train table. South Lorain Branch: The charming Children's Area contains a fascinating fish aquarium, games, puzzles, an activity table, magazines, videos, children’s books and much more. There are tables and chairs just the right size for little ones, plus a children’s computer loaded with learning games. A banked reading area, designed like a miniature staircase with rounded bench seating, is a great spot for parents and children to sit and enjoy a book together. Backpacks offer a variety of books, games, puppets and puzzles based around a variety of themes such as: pets; music; science; favorite book characters; and more in a convenient easy-to-carry backpack. Click for pic
The Homework Help Center at the Main Library has become a popular, well-attended opportunity for children to receive homework help from qualified, caring mentors. Click for pic
Programs with children in mind:
An annual Summer Reading Program for toddlers through young adults offers a fun way to earn free books and prizes and participate in exciting activities while improving their reading skills during the summer.
Story hours for babies, toddlers and preschoolers provide an opportunity for caregivers and children through age five to enjoy stories, music, finger plays and occasional crafts.
Family and special event programs highlight holidays, feature authors and guest speakers, and provide a variety of craft and learning experiences.
